The summer after a large fire at Lake Tahoe burned 3500 acres life began again. Large thistle patches sprouted up where there were none before. Woodpeckers returned as did many small plants and animals. One of the most astonishing events were the hummingbirds. One small patch of thistle attracted 30 to 50 rufous hummingbirds. I had never seen this many hummers in one spot at one time in all my years of nature photography.
