728 Bullwinkle.jpg

What can I say about this image? Just too funny. I was photographing the moose rut in Grand Teton National Park and had waited about an hour for this bull to get up and get active. The female, or cow moose, will rise first, then the bull will get up to follow her and see if she is ready to mate. One way for the bull to test her readiness is to sniff the air. The bull will raise his lower lip while lifting his head to the sky, taking in a deep breath through his nose, smelling the pheromones of the female. The complete ritual is rather complex but is an amazing event to watch and photograph. I was rather close to this bull as he began the lip curl.
