If you spend enough time on the water in southeast Alaska, you will see whales. Seeing them close, and getting photographs, is another story. I knew Frederick Sound was a good place to find whales, and traveling through it on a ferry proved exciting. Many whales were spotted. However, photographing from the ferry is not the best way to get great photos.
I flew into Kake and hired a guide to take me out for a couple of days. We saw, and photographed, plenty of humpback whales. At one time we had 8 "humpies" circling the boat and surface feeding. What a treat!
