The aurora borealis is the most incredible natural phenomenon I have ever witnessed. This image, with the big dipper and other stars, was taken on a cold and clear night. That is the best time to view this spectacle of nature. Photographing it is another story. Long shutter speeds, fast lenses and fast film might help, but timing is the biggest part. The northern lights are not predictable. When the lights are cooperative and bright, and you're awake, images like this are possible. One more tip, dress warm!
