A typical day on the water in Frederick Sound in Southeast Alaska, soft rain, cool temperatures, and whales. This image says Alaska, but what is really unique is how the shape of the whales mimic the islands in the background, hence the title.
Photographing humped back whales is always a challenge and always a joy. I never tire of just watching them surface, feed, dive, and sometimes breach. Just floating with the engines off a whale might come close to the boat, surface and blow, giving me quite a startle.
